Gota Kano
Professor, Kochi University of Technology

Gota Kano was born in Hyogo Prefecture. He received both BS and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Osaka University in 1960 and 1970, respectively. Since he joined Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., LTD, in 1960, he has been working for Matsushita Electronics Corporation (MEC) which is now 100% subsidiary of MEI.

Dr. Kano was Managing director, Member of the Board, in charge of Electronics Research Laboratory at MEC. His responsibility extended to all areas of R&D activities at MEC, including semiconductors, display, and lighting. He also served as a board director of Plasmaco Corporation, an American firm, since Jan. 1997. He retired from Matsushita in October of 1998. After retirement, he took on Professorships at Kochi University of Technology and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs; visiting Professorships at Hokkaido University and Osaka University. He continues to serve as a consultant to both Matsushita Electronic Industrial Co., LTD, and Symetrix Corporation of the U.S.

He received the IEEE Fellowship award in 1995 for his achievement on GaAs technology and its successful industrialization for consumer market represented by mobile telephone and related products. He has made many contributions to the progress of semiconductor technology over the past 35 years. He holds more than 130 patents, published more than 90 papers and made presentations at about 30 international conferences. Significant achievements so far attained in real business are due not only to his rigid philosophy that all the R&D activities must ultimately reach business goal and make profit, but also to his entrepreneurial and creative spirit toward new technologies. His expertise covers all the semiconductor areas, Memory, Micro-controller, Bipolar, CCD and Compound Semiconductor.

Dr. Kano is a great believer in joint venture R&D, especially in terms of complementary collaboration between U.S. and Japan. He was responsible for about ten important joint R&D business programs with American companies and universities, and sometimes served on boards to facilitate them. His academic activity is still extensive. He served as Executive Committee Member and Far East Chairman of the ISSCC/IEEE, 1994-1995, Councillor, Japan Applied Physics, 1992-1996.
